Weathernews participated in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, 2024, for the third consecutive year.

At an event on Early Warning Systems (EWS)* hosted by the Ministry of the Environment at the Japan Pavilion on November 16th, Shoichi Tateno, head of public-private partnerships and sustainability, gave a presentation on the latest climate change countermeasure services and examples of public-private partnerships in EWS. In the presentation, he introduced successful cases of climate change adaptation services in the manufacturing industry, particularly in Southeast Asia, as well as the latest services and technologies for dealing with heat waves, forest fires, etc.

We believe that by combining weather services with climate risk analysis, it is possible to mitigate the risk of damage to corporate bases and assets, and reduce financial risks and countermeasure & maintenance costs.

In the panel discussion, Japanese government and domestic and international companies, and Indonesian & Malaysian government officials also participated to discuss public-private collaboration for early warning systems. Daisuke Abe, Executive Officer of Service Development and Risk Management, took the stage to speak about the importance of making observation data held by government agencies open to the private sector, and clarifying the roles & responsibilities between the public and private sector in order to promote adaptation measures. This statement strongly supports the actions being promoted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

In addition to promoting this kind of "adaptation," Weathernews is also providing a wide and deep range of services globally, such as CO2 emission optimization support for vessels and demand/supply analysis service for power generation. We will continue to work in partnership and cooperation with relevant governments and companies in Japan and overseas to achieve the goals set by the world, from both the "adaptation" and "mitigation" sides of climate change.

※Early Warning Systems (EWS)
