2nd WMO-IMO Symposium on Extreme Maritime Weather
Strengthening cooperation between the public and private sector to enhance the maritime safety services

Published on Dec 12, 2024

From September 23rd to 26th. Weathernews participated in the 2nd WMO-IMO Symposium, held at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) headquarters in London, UK. It was the second conference event jointly held by the IMO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Governmental agencies and international organizations involved in meteorology and oceanography from around the world, as well as a small number of private companies, gathered to discuss various themes.

The main theme of this event was "Extreme Maritime Weather," and Amy Bhul, our Operations Leader of Marine Weather Team, presented on stage as a representative of a private weather company.

In her presentation, she has shared the history of Weathernews, which began with a marine accident, the weather services for various markets that have grown and developed since originating from marine weather; the latest weather and climate services and the cutting-edge technologies that support them, and the importance of public-private collaboration in further developing the weather and marine industry.

She also explained that our marine weather services are not only support the safety of maritime shipping, but are also useful in addressing climate change and other environmental issues by optimizing ship fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This drew interest and many questions and opinions from the audience.

Representatives from international organizations and governments were in attendance at the venue, and in the panel discussion that followed the presentations, there was a discussion on public-private collaboration and how weather and oceanographic data can be shared around the world, resulting in an extremely important exchange of information and opinions.

We believe that by making global weather and oceanographic data widely available and used as public property, new value and services will be created and given back to society. We will continue to hold dialogues with international organizations such as the IMO and WMO, and with governments around the world, including Japan, to build the relationships of mutual trust, and work to develop services that protect safety at sea and on land.
