On October 25th, Jim Skea, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)* and the Ministry of Environment Japan (MOEJ) visited the Weathernews headquarters in Chiba, Japan.
During the information and opinion exchange session, Tomohiro Ishibashi, CEO of Weathernews Inc. gave a presentation on the company's history, the latest technology, and meteorological & climate change countermeasure services.
Using Japan as an example, the participants discussed the important role that private weather companies play in countering climate change, as well as their expectations for possible collaboration between governments, international organizations, and private companies.
After the session, the group visited the Operation Center where all services are carried out. Leaders from each business division gave detailed explanations about weather services and efforts related to climate change.
In order to support responses to recent natural disasters, which are becoming more severe and frequent due to global warming, we will incorporate AI and other technologies into our weather and climate data, and create new services that lead to “mitigation” of global warming, which contributes to reducing CO2 emissions, while focusing on “adaptation” to climate change.
*The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was created in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for assessing the science related to climate change.
