Contributing to medals! Our Jakarta Office and Sports Weather Team conduct on-site observations

Weathernews Inc. (Head Office: Mihama-ku, Chiba-shi; CEO: Chihito Kusabiraki) supported multiple Japan National Teams at an Asian sporting event held in Jakarta in August. Staff from our Jakarta Office worked in collaboration with our Sports Weather Team to conduct on-site observations (weather, temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and sunshine) from one month before the event started. Regarding sunshine, our experts filmed videos while driving around the course, and we shared information about shady areas with teams and athletes, an important factor for taking the best position. From August 26th to 31st, our Sports Weather Team was based on site in Jakarta. From early in the morning, they conducted observations at 15-minute intervals, using the data collected to provide forecasts and observations, which enabled teams to formulate strategies and tactics aimed at winning medals.

At this time of year, Jakarta has high temperatures and there is a great risk of heatstroke, so the weather conditions are quite similar to those of Tokyo. Through our activities together with teams and athletes in Jakarta, Weathernews has gathered extensive knowledge and an awareness of challenges faced. We will use this expertise to improve our support contents and work to develop new prediction technologies aimed at an international-scale sporting event to be held in 2020 in Tokyo.
